16 DAYS IN WA

EXHIBITION & LIGHTS

Event Date

08.11.2026 - 10.12.2026
16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign that calls on communities to stand together against violence towards women and girls. Through conversation, education and collective action, the campaign encourages everyone to challenge harmful behaviours, promote respect and help create safer, more equal communities where everyone can thrive.

Spanning from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) through to 10 December (Human Rights Day) each year. The campaign takes its inspiration from the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

For 30 years, Women’s Legal Service WA has stood beside women at some of the hardest moments of their lives. Since 1996 we have listened, advised and advocated for women facing family, domestic and sexual violence. We have learned that the law is only part of the story. In 2024–25 we supported 1,676 women. As we mark our 30th anniversary, we recommit to a community where every woman is safe, heard and supported.

A photography exhibition of women’s hands and the things they hold.

Each portrait focuses on the hands of a woman with lived experience of family, domestic, sexual and gender-based violence: what she carried with her, what she left behind, and the objects and gestures that speak to who she is now. Photographed by Claudia Caporn, the portraits sit beside the women’s own words, in their own voices wherever possible. Each woman chose what to hold and what to say, and appears under a pseudonym to protect her privacy. On show from 8 November to 10 December 2026, Held runs through 16 Days in WA: 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, and marks 30 years of Women’s Legal Service WA.
