Runway to Big Sky brings together ten Western Australian artists in a shared creative journey that honours the vastness of our skies, the depth of our Country, and the essential work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (WA).

The exhibition takes its name from the moment an aircraft gathers speed along the runway, preparing to lift into the open sky, a powerful metaphor for the RFDS's daily mission and for the collective artistic momentum that begins here.

All participating artists contribute to a fundraising initiative that directly benefits remote and regional communities.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Western Operations serves a vast "waiting room" spanning 2.5 million square kilometres, making it one of the largest and most remote health jurisdictions in the world. Delivering 24-hour emergency evacuations, inter-hospital transfers, including COVID-19 transfers, and a broad range of primary healthcare services, RFDS plays a vital role in connecting remote and regional communities to essential care.

Operating the largest RFDS fleet in Australia, the service includes three Rio Tinto PC-24 LifeFlight Jets, 17 PC-12 turbo-prop aircraft, the advanced PC-12 PRO, and two Fortescue Heli-Med Service EC-145 helicopters. Each aircraft is equipped with state-of-the-art aeromedical technology, effectively functioning as an intensive care unit in the sky and ensuring patients receive critical care when and where it is needed most.

Supported by a team of nearly 400 doctors, flight nurses, pilots, engineers, logisticians, and corporate professionals, RFDS is committed to delivering life-saving care across Western Australia. With strategically located bases in Broome, Port Hedland, Meekatharra, Kalgoorlie, and Jandakot, the organisation responds to the unique healthcare needs of the communities it serves. For more than 95 years, RFDS Western Operations has remained dedicated to advancing health equity for everyone who lives, works, and travels throughout Western Australia.

About Dennis "Noongali" Kickett

Dennis "Noongali" Kickett is a respected Ballardong Noongar artist from York, Western Australia, whose artistic career spans nearly four decades. Born in 1953 and raised on Ballardong Country, Dennis began painting professionally in 1987, drawing inspiration from Noongar culture, family histories, Dreaming stories, and his deep connection to Country.

Dennis has a longstanding history of supporting community and charitable initiatives through art, including exhibitions associated with the Australian Red Cross, participation in the Guide Dogs Australia charity auction, and involvement in community development programs supporting Aboriginal youth and social wellbeing.

Through Noongali Art Consultancy, Dennis continues his commitment to culture, community, and philanthropy by bringing artists and charitable organisations together through the power of art.
